202008_WM_01_woman Trying to keep your breast milk supply up and stocking bottles on hand for emergencies? A dedicated freezer for all the needs of your baby could be of good help.

Whether you are returning to work, leaving your baby with a sitter, or simply have extra liquid gold to spare, storing your breast milk will ensure that your baby always has the best food, even when you are not there.

Mums know that breast milk is far better than any type of formula and work so hard to collect it, hence it is all the more important to store breast milk the right way and retain all of its health-giving benefits.

While breast milk is naturally bacteria-free, keeping bacteria at bay should still be your top priority when it comes to storing it.

Breast milk should be stored in clean and sterilised airtight breast milk bottles or breast milk storage bags made from food-grade, BPA-free materials.

For easier thawing and minimal wastage, it is recommended to store breast milk in small portions less than 60ml. Do not fill your storage bottle or bag up to the brim, keep it at three-quarters full to allow for expansion during freezing.

With a breast milk forming tray, you can lay your breast milk storage bags flat while freezing, then arrange the frozen milk vertically in drawer-type storage compartments to keep it neat, tidy, and organised.

After expressing breast milk, you can label it with the date it was expressed and store it at a consistent temperature, depending on how soon you want to use it for feeding your baby.

For healthy, full-term infants, breast milk at room temperature (16°C to 25°C) can last up to 4 hours, in the fridge (4°C to 7°C) it can last up to 3 days, and in the freezer (-18°C to -20°C) it can last up to 6 months.

The Haier BD-88DEM Breast Milk Freezer helps preserve the nutrients of breast milk in one touch with an optimum freezing temperature of -20°C.

Let your baby consume your breast milk with the “first in, first out” rule to maximise freshness and never refreeze breast milk once thawed.

You can thaw breast milk in the fridge for about 12 hours, set it in a container of warm water, or hold it under warm running water with a maximum temperature of 37°C, but not thaw it at room temperature, in a microwave, or in boiling water.

While thawing, gently swirl it without shaking or stirring to mix any separated fat. Remember, the slower breast milk is thawed, the lesser antibodies are lost!
