American BUSINESS reported on Haier on the front
page on May 22nd, 2000. The topic was that Haier
China offers jobs in U.S.
Extracts are as follows:
QINGDAO, China---Haier Group is sending the United
States a new Chinese export jobs.
China's biggest appliance maker just opened its first
U.S. factory, hiring 180 people in Camden, S.C., to
make refrigerators under its own brand name. Last
year, Haier started a design studio in Los Angeles to
get closer to American consumer tastes.
Haier's $30 million venture in Sough Carolina comes
as China is nearing its goal of joining the World Trade
Organization and perhaps seeing Congress give it
permanent low-tariff access to U.S. markets.
Haier is leading a new wave of ambitious Chinese
companies that hope to create international famous
brand. Chinese enterprises are trying to share the
profits through selling the technology and brand of
themselves.
CEO Zhang Ruimin of Haier said that an enterprise
that only manufactured in China and exported to the
overseas market could not be an international
enterprise.
There won't be a bright future if Chinese enterprises
try to enter the world market through exporting the
cheap appliances.
The trade deficit of U.S. will increase because
American enterprises have turned to face the market
of China and other countries of low income. It is very
important that Haier offers jobs in U.S.
Economist Andy Xie believed that it was very normal
for Chinese enterprise to enter overseas markets for
more consumers. He said that TV and other home
appliance produced by Chinese enterprise could
compete with those of Japan and South Korea.
Some Chinese enterprises have built the overseas
marketing net and Haier has done more. Haier has
built factories in some developing countries and design
studios and service centers in Europe and U.S.
Haier has made a miracle of China in the past twenty
years.
